The ceremony was held immediately after Justice Breyer’s retirement went into effect.
Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in to the Supreme Court by Chief Justice John Roberts on Thursday, becoming the first Black woman to have a seat on the nation’s highest court. The 51-year-old Jackson takes the place of Justice Stephen Breyer, whose resignation was effective just prior to Jackson’s swearing-in.
“With a full heart, I accept the solemn responsibility of supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States and administering justice without fear or favor, so help me God,” Justice Jackson stated. “I am truly grateful to be part of the promise of our great Nation. I extend my sincerest thanks to all of my new colleagues for their warm and gracious welcome.”
